Sub-categories enhance the thrill of discovery for millions of users globally

Singapore, 25 August 2016 – Carousell sub-categories go live today, improving search and discovery for users around the world. This update makes it even easier for Carousellers to find a new home for things they no longer need, or discover their next treasure on the mobile classifieds marketplace.

With over 35 million listings on the mobile classifieds marketplace, users have been looking forward to improved filters to help them find exactly what they need. Carousellers can now choose from over 80 sub-categories when they list a product for sale, or when searching for their next find. Since the update, some of the most popular choices in APAC have been men & women’s fashion, electronics & gadgets, and parenting essentials. In Singapore, Carousellers have listed thousands of Pokemon-related items, reflecting the Pokemon Go craze that’s been sweeping the island. Whether it is a Pokemon phone cover, power bank or plushie, buyers can expect their search for the next rare Pokemon collectible to take significantly less time.

Douglas Yong, a 22 year old who has been using Carousell since 2014, enthused, “Before sub-categories were available, buyers had to scroll through quite a few listings, before they found the sunglasses from my store @thetinyislandemporium. There’s just so much variety on Carousell! Now that I can list them under accessories, it’s much easier to connect with interested buyers.”

This highly anticipated feature is a major update that has been months in the making. The Carousell team combed through thousands of keywords to shortlist the most frequently used phrases in each market, to determine the sub-categories that would be most relevant to users. This list is tailored to meet the needs of local communities, making it easier for Carousellers in Singapore to find their Pokemon collectible, while Taiwan users will have no problems finding their next favourite milk tea.

The introduction of sub-categories is part of a series of updates to improve discovery on Carousell. While previous improvements such as “new or used” filters, and options to arrange for meet-ups, mail or delivery, were released as incremental updates for Carousell users globally, the introduction of sub-categories noticeably improves the appearance and functionality when users are listing an item for sale, or browsing the marketplace.

Lucas Ngoo, Carousell co-founder and CTO shares, “Carousellers love the thrill of selling an item quickly, or scoring a good find. With over 70 new listings added every minute, we need to constantly improve discovery for our users to get the most out of their Carousell experience. Sub-categories make listings easier to find, so that users can sell their preloved items faster, and fill their lives with more meaningful things instead. We prioritise updates that improve the Carousell experience for the majority of our users, and will continue to evolve this over time based on what our users need.”

The sub-categories update goes live today for all Carousell users globally, and is available on the Carousell app and web version.
