Hong Kong, 26 November 2024 — Popular classifieds marketplace and recommerce platform Carousell has released its first “Year-in-Secondhand” insights, revealing unique ways Hong Kongers and users across Southeast Asia and Taiwan engage with the circular economy.
Hobbies and Toys is Carousell’s second top-transacted category for secondhand items across the region, and Hong Kong accounted for nearly 45% of regional transactions. Interest in toys surges each July, driven by summer holidays and events such as Ani-Com & Games Hong Kong. Through secondhand toy transactions alone, Hong Kong users saved the equivalent of 1,291 tonnes in carbon emissions, comparable to 2,947 return flights from Hong Kong to Tokyo.
On average, Hong Kong users earned approximately HK$6,800 this year from selling secondhand items—the second highest in the region after Singapore. This reflects Carousell’s role in supporting Hong Kong’s circular economy, where users not only declutter but also derive economic value from pre-loved items.
Key insights on Carousell Hong Kong user behaviour
- Top-Searched Terms: ‘Chiikawa’ rose to the second most-searched term in Hong Kong, surpassing the usual popular luxury brands and electronics.
- High Activity in the Evenings: Hong Kong users are most active at 10 pm for searches and chats, with peak listing times around 9 pm, aligning closely with regional trends.
- Peak Transaction Time: Hong Kong and Singapore users transact the most in the evenings at 6pm, while Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan transact the most at 9pm.
- All-Time Favourites: Hobbies & Toys and Women’s Fashion are the most popular categories to buy, sell and search in throughout the day
Driving the circular economy in the region
“Our leadership across key markets gives us unparalleled insights into how and what people are buying and selling every day, helping us develop features and programmes that drive demand for secondhand goods. As one of the region’s most popular classifieds marketplace for buying and selling almost anything, Carousell aims to leverage our position to make it easy for anyone to participate in the circular economy and fostering a culture of prioritising secondhand to make a meaningful impact on people and the planet,” said Ms Jing Zhi Peh, Regional Head of Goods, Carousell.
“Hong Kong has taken the lead in the secondhand toys market, fueled by a robust collector community and a rising preference for sustainable, affordable alternatives. We’re thrilled to see the community’s enthusiasm for giving quality items a new life. Carousell remains committed to supporting Hong Kong’s circular economy by providing a trusted, convenient platform that brings both economic and environmental value,” said Ms Karen Lin, Head of Goods, Carousell Hong Kong.
To encourage more Hong Kongers to make secondhand their first choice, Carousell has launched new features this August to make secondhand transactions more trusted and convenient
