Celebrate Earth Day: Carousell reveals increasing awareness on sustainable shopping among Hong Kong consumers
Gen Z welcomes secondhand shopping more than before, with number of used item searches by under 18-year-olds skyrocketing up 106% in 2021 versus 2020
Hong Kong, 21 April 2022 — Carousell, the leading classifieds group in Greater Southeast Asia, reveals that Hong Kongers have shown increased openness towards secondhand options over the past two years, with the number of secondhand listings in Hong Kong increasing nearly 60% between 2019 and 2021. This increase is similar to the growth of the total number of listings during the same period, signifying a gradual change in local consumer behaviours. To further nurture an environmentally-conscious community, Carousell analysed secondhand shopping trends of different age groups in Hong Kong from 2020 to 2021 in celebration of Earth Day.
Gen Z in Hong Kong more open to secondhand options
Over the past few years, secondhand purchases have grown as a popular choice among Hong Kong shoppers of all ages. The number of searches for used items grew more than 45% in all age groups from 2020 to 2021, implying a societal shift towards greater sustainability.
Hearteningly, Generation Z demonstrated a higher level of eco-consciousness in recent years, indicating the potential for growth in the circular economy driven by youths. In the 18-24 age group, the number of searches for used items increased by 48% in 2021, compared with the preceding year. In contrast, searches for new items grew by only 2%. The inclination towards secondhand products was more pronounced in the under 18 age group, with used items searches doubling in 2021, soaring 106% compared with the previous year.
Interesting secondhand shopping behaviours among different age groups
Interest for used products was diverse across different age groups, a testament of Carousell’s success in leveraging the brand as a sustainable shopping platform for users at different life stages. ‘Hobbies and Toys’ ranked as the top secondhand search category in every age group, followed by both women’s and men’s fashion apparel searches, as social distancing regulations led to more people exploring stay-at- home entertainment.
Video games and consoles were most frequently searched for by those in the 18-24 age bracket, echoing typical teenage interests. With almost 70,000 tonnes of e-waste generated annually in Hong Kong1, it is encouraging that the younger generation are open to secondhand electronics as both a practical and sustainable choice for entertainment. Collectibles top searches for the older age groups, with above 54- year-olds searching for ‘Disney’ and 25–34-year-olds searching for ‘Bearbrick’, but 35–44-year-olds show stronger preference for greener hobbies such as cycling. ‘Bicycles’ appear second in searches, showing continuing demand since 20212.
Embark your green journey on Carousell
Carousell’s analysis revealed that the sale of preowned items, in addition to being a solution to overconsumption, is a value-for-money alternative for local bargain hunters. Secondhand products in the top three most affordable categories on Carousell – Babies & Kids, Beauty & Personal Care and Pet Supplies – cost less than HK$300 on average.
Users such as dance teacher Kris (@yeahling) said, “I have been selling both personal and pet items I no longer need on Carousell for the past five years, instead of dumping it to reduce wastage. Recently I sold an automatic pet feeder to an elderly man who just learned how to shop online, and I am happy to be able to help another person who needs the item. It is one of the ways in which Hong Kongers can support each other.”
Carousell has curated suggestions for users to improve their secondhand buy-sell experiences. Prospective secondhand buyers can utilise search filters available at a category level, including by location and by brand, to narrow down search results. They can also use the Saved Searches feature for quick access for up to three search queries, and the Item Condition filter to sort products from ‘brand new’ to ‘heavily used’ to find the most suitable item.
Carousell has also incorporated features that boost visibility for the sellers of preloved belongings. They can use the following steps to make their listing stand out: 1) Select a clear cover photo and take images from multiple angles to catch buyers’ attention; 2) Complete all questions in the sell form including the optional ones; and 3) Price competitively using the soft-launched Price Checker tool to view the recommended price range for trending items.
“It is encouraging to see more Hongkongers choosing to resell preowned items and being open to buy secondhand items. As a pioneer for mobile classifieds in the region, Carousell is focused on making buying secondhand items as secure and convenient as buying brand new items. With one in five Hongkongers being Carousellers, we remain committed to encouraging the public to join the sustainable revolution and make secondhand the first choice for consumers,” said Kevin Huang, Managing Director for Carousell Hong Kong.
